An Alternative To Cave Painting

An Alternative To Cave Painting - A Collaboration With Nic Rodriguez

"An Alternative To Cave Painting"
48" x 48" - mixed media on canvas
$1195, plus shipping

I just realized that I never posted the completed version of this painting online. It's a collaboration with my friend Nic Rodriguez, who's artwork I think is super awesome. I think we started this painting in July 2008 and I'm such a typical slacker artist that I didn't finish my portion of the job until January 2009.

This painting actually has a little bit of history in its short life. For starters, I've had to strap this thing to the roof of my car more times than I can count. Drive it to Nic's house. Drive it to my house. Drive it to the gallery. Drive it to a film studio for a commercial (which you'll have the chance to see in a minute). Walk it up three flights of stairs. Drive it back to the gallery. Drive it to a one night art show. Drive it back. Drive it to another art show where it was on display for three months. Drive it back to my gallery. One of these days I will drive it to a collector's house and I will never have to drive it anywhere again.

Here are a few behind the scene photos of the painting in progress.

And here's the commercial it was featured in. You'll see it four times. The opening scene as well as at the eight second mark, fifteen second, and fifty three seconds.

Somewhere I have more photos of this paintings adventures being strapped to the roof of my car, but it's late and I can't seem to find them at the moment. Anyway, If you're interested in purchasing this please don't hesitate to let me know. I have yet to ship a painting this size, but I'd be willing too. I'm guessing the shipping cost would be in the $120 range for something this big. However, if you live close I'd be more than happy to strap this thing to the roof of my car one last time.

Thanks for looking!

Titillating Gallery Shots And The Love Of My Life

I just posted a bunch of "installation shots" from the Lovesick show on my Flickr page. For those of you pressed for time or possess a hatred for having to navigate away from the current page or are just too plain lazy to click on that link I have hand picked (or shall I say mouse clicked) a few shots that I think best represent the exhibit.

Lovesick - installation shot
This is the main wall where I have over forty pieces on display.

Lovesick - installation shot
This is one of the guest artists walls. This particular wall features Stenzskull, Aaron Kraten, and Nic Rodriguez.

Lovesick - installation shot
This is the other guest artists wall featuring Neal Breton and Kendra Binney.

Lovesick - opening reception
Here are some peeps checking out the show. Thank God people showed up, which kept me from feeling like a loser on suicide watch.

Lovesick - installation shot
And this is what you see when you enter the front door of Alpha Cult.

There are some more detailed photos if you dare to venture on over to, once again, my flickr page. Unfortunately, I never got any of those arm in arm big smiling gang throwing glamour shots with any of the patrons, guest artists, or gallery owners. That's sad for me. What's not sad for me, however, is that I've been eating Candy Cane Joe Joe's all night!

The Early Bird Gets The Worm

The Claassen Gallery has released a new print by Nic Rodriguez. The title is "Early Bird" and measures 5.5" x 6.5". This print has been mounted on 3/4" thick pine wood. The edges have been painted black and the surface has been coated with a thick layer of clear plastic resin. The resin coating provides a protective high gloss finish. It basically looks like a yummy piece of shiny candy. Each print has been signed on the back by Nic.

Nic Sneak Peek #2

"Sneak peek #2" leans a bit towards the perverted/erotic side of the spectrum.

Ok, it doesn't quite "lean" on the perverted so much as it is smack dab in the middle of it.

This painting is acrylic on wood and measures 11.25" x 14.5". Right now the title is up for debate. It's either "Power U" or "Gold Member". Cast your vote.

Nic Sneak Peek #1

I will try to post at least one "sneak peek" a day until the opening. This is the first one and it's one of my personal favorites. It's called "Chicken-Fried Steak Burger" and is approximately 8.5" x 11", acrylic on wood.

Oh! Also, I made a "set" on flickr dedicated to this show. Check it out. Tongue And Teeth by Nic Rodriguez. This photo set will be updated quite a bit as the show develops and will eventually be the home to all things "Tongue And Teeth" related, like photos from opening night and available originals and prints, and other goodies.

Tongue And Teeth Show Prep, Post One

The countdown has begun. The opening for Nic's show is in four days. Nic started painting one of the gallery walls this afternoon. Check it.

I'm a real sucker for pink, so I naturally think this wall looks amazing. And as the day turned to evening we headed outside so Nic could do a little piece by my front door.

It will be a hectic week, but I'll try to keep you all informed with how the show is coming along. Also, I will try to keep the gallery open all week during the set up. If you come by and I'm closed feel free to give me a call and I'll probably be able to meet you within ten minutes or so.

The Madness Begins

nic's postcards have arrived

The postcards for Nic's show arrived yesterday! It's always an exciting day around the gallery when art show postcards arrive. It makes everything seem more official. Plus, it means we get to start promoting. Fun times. So, we already mailed out 300 of these suckers and then ran out of postcard stamps. We probably have at least 100 more to send out. Unfortunately, I've had to retype 100's of snail mail addresses because the file I had them saved in on my old computer was not opening on my new computer. Fancy that. Luckily, I never threw away the dozens of sheets of paper with the handwritten addresses on them. Anyway, I hope all of you (my trusty 2,000+ readers) will be able to attend this exhibition on August 1. It's going to be awesome! For reals. I mean, seriously, check out that "Mad Hatter" painting. It's dope!

Live Painting Tomorrow at Coalition Board Shop

YO!

Nic and I were asked to do some live painting for the Grand Opening of the Coaltion Board Shop. If you're in SLO come by and say hi. We'll be painting from 4-8pm. Feel free to bring me a Kit-Kat. Nic doesn't like chocolate (crazy, huh?), so feel free to bring him some Sour Patch Kids.

Here is a mass email I just sent out.

Hello Everybody!

It's been over a month since my last email and well, I've missed you. I have a few things going on that you might be interested in. Then again, you might not. But what the hell, I'll tell you about them anyway. So...

My friend Nic, who has been in the local press for the last couple of months due to his arrest on suspected vandalism charges, is still in the midst of a legal battle. We'd like to think the end is near, but who knows for sure. I'm not sure how much I can say about the case since nothing has been resolved at this point, but some friends and I are doing what we can to help Nic out. Nic's lawyer is awesome by the way and totally sympathizes with the case. A more perfect lawyer could not have been found. However, a good lawyer doesn't come cheap. Since the day of the arrest I have been formulating some sort of fundraising event. You know what, I should interject for a brief moment to give a little back story in case you're wondering why I want to help a "suspected vandal". Nic Rodriguez was arrested after his house was raided by SLOPD (San Luis Obispo Police Department). The officers confiscated all art related items in Nic's house. This includes pens, markers, paint, brushes, completed and in progress canvases, a blank canvas and about 60 empty cans of spray paint. I mention the spray cans because the local media sensationalized the "73 cans" as if Nic was a "prolific graffiti artist" never mentioning that only about 10 of them had paint in them and that all of his canvas paintings have some sort of spray painted elements to them. Nic has never been caught in the act of vandalizing anything, so to me the case is totally circumstantial. Of course, that is my opinion and I have not seen all the evidence the police have gathered against Nic. What upsets me is that they are not returning the confiscated items, (which includes a lot more than what I mentioned above) which anybody who has bought art supplies knows, is a HUGE investment. HUGE. Nic sells his artwork and has done commission work and actually has at least one commission piece in the works as I type this. The point I'm trying to make is that through his creative talents Nic has been able to supplement his income through his art sales and by the SLOPD taking his art supplies they have successfully taken away part of his ability to earn an income. (What is it the Fifth Amendment says about no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property?) Nic is slowly building up his supply of art making tools and is working on several new paintings. We will not have an official fundraising event until his court proceedings come to an end because we would like to have a goal to work towards. We know the lawyer fees, but we don't know if he will have fines to pay on top of that. For now we have some small merchandise items to help raise money like button packs with Nic's artwork and also some signed prints. Both are available in the Claassen Gallery Online Shop, http://claassengallery.bigcartel.com. When the "official" fundraising event takes place we will have some items to raffle off as well as some, what I like to call, "grab bags", which will contain various items like buttons, stickers, prints, shirts, etc.

Moving right along.
I am currently in a group show called "Analog Generation" at Alpha Cult in Long Beach CA. If you're in So Cal please go check it out. It's a super awesome store/gallery that sells all those fun designer vinyl toys. Oh, and lots of fancy artwork on the walls. This show is much like a rock concert. Think of Aaron Kraten as the headliner and the other artists as the opening acts. It's a great set up. Aaron is the main dude with a lot of work filling the biggest wall in the space and Alpha Cult lets him pick some artist friends to display work on the other walls. It's a real honor that Aaron asked me to part of his show. If you want to check it out you only have about a week left. The show ends on June 10.

Moving along some more.
For San Luis Obispo locals if you haven't come across Coalition Board Shop it's time you give them a little visit. They opened on April 1 and will soon be having their "official" Grand Opening. The week before they opened I spent many a late night there painting the outside of the dressing rooms. I have photos of them posted on my Flickr page (www.flickr.com/sxtyfoursquares), but photos hardly do the artwork any justice. I haven't been told the date yet for the official Grand Opening so I'll have to get back to you on that, however, Nic and myself will be doing some live painting and there will be a DJ and it should be just one big fat party you don't want to miss.

I'd say that about sums it up.
If you read this whole thing I congratulate you.

Thanks!
- Jeff

FREE PILO

Artist Nic Rodriguez (PILO) was recently arrested for suspected vandalism. The case has been getting a lot of local press for many reasons which I can't get into at the moment. Nic is a friend and featured artist in the "Urban Escapades" show in my gallery, so in an effort to help him out with his legal defense fees we are planning a fundraiser. We're still working out all the details, but we will be releasing items online as we make them. So, let's get this party started!

The "FREE PILO" button pack.

click the photo to purchase or visit www.claassengallery.bigcartel.com.

All profits from the sale of these will go towards helping Nic's legal defense.

We have a lot of other ideas in the works that we hope to have available real soon including "PILO GRAB BAGS" which will delight any PILO fan with a plethora of items like t-shirts, buttons, stickers, prints, small original paintings/drawings, etc. And eventually a live event will be hosted, probably in the gallery, but we have a lot of planning to do before that happens.

Don't worry, we'll keep you posted.
